 2016 Harvest Festival

We kicked off October by celebrating the BVSD School Food Project’s third annual Harvest Festival. Nearly 20 organizations from around the county joined us to provide fun, hands-on activities for students and their families, including pumpkin carving and face painting. Guests got their hands a little dirty wrangling worms, planting seeds, and learning about good soil and the importance of composting. Students also got to meet three of our farmer partners - Haydn from Bayberry Fresh, Mark from Ollin Farms, and Sarah from Jones Farms Organics. We all enjoyed a little taste of what our local farmers do for BVSD while sampling the bright, crisp bell peppers.

Later in the day, attendees turned their excitement from the fall harvest to our Elementary Iron Chef Competition. Six teams of 2-4 BVSD students cooked up a storm, offering delicious and creative after-school snacks to our judges. Winning out, the Columbine Cooking Cats created a refreshing Upside Down Caprese and took $100 for additional cooking and food learning opportunities in their school. Second, third and the runners-up also took home big checks to implement cooking classes or nutrition education opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success! While it's hard to go wrong with such beautiful weather, wonderful music from the Heartstring Hunters and fun that the whole family can enjoy, we couldn't have done it without you.
