BVSD’s 2026 Middle School Iron Chef Competition: Food on the Move!

What if your favorite food idea ended up on the school lunch menu? 

Some of BVSD’s most popular cafeteria meals started as bold ideas from middle school students just like you. These dishes were dreamed up, tested, and perfected during BVSD’s annual Iron Chef Student Cooking Competition. This time-honored annual BVSD event is where creativity meets culture, whole flair meets flavor, and where students just might see their culinary inspiration come to life on lunch trays across the district.

How Does it Work?

Middle school students in teams of 2-4 students submitted recipes based on this year’s theme, “Food on the Move!” or handheld foods. After the submission deadline, Executive Chef Yuri Sanow and Food Services Director Carolyn Villa review each of them for scalability, nutrition, and cost. Using these guidelines, they identify five final teams to compete at the live cook-off at the Culinary Center. 

Each team must also include an adult mentor (teacher, parent, paraeducator, or other adult). Mentors can assist with recipes and preparation, but only students may cook during the competition. 

The Big Event

The Iron Chef event is open to the public! The live competition will take place on March 11 at the Apex Teaching Kitchen, at 6500 Arapahoe Rd, Boulder where Food Services district managers will be on hand to support teams and observe cooking processes.

Finalist teams will prepare their chosen dishes live as family, friends, and even local media watch from a comfortable distance. Spectators can enjoy tasty menu samples provided by the BVSD culinary staff while they take in the action. After plating and presentations, our chef judges will deliberate before presenting the winners with a celebratory “big check” for their school.

But the biggest Iron Chef honor of all? The winning team and dish will be featured on next year’s BVSD school menu!
